Vokkaliga Gowda is the largest community in Karnataka whose main profession is agriculture. It is derived from Archaic Tamil-Kannada term Kavunda denoting a village or family head. Vokkaliga Gowda is the most prominent and powerful community in Karnataka and plays a huge role in the state politics and the Economy. There are many sub-groups but the main sub-groups are Gangadkar Vokkaliga, Kunchitiga Vokkaliga, Morasu Vokkaliga, Hallikar Vokkaliga, Reddy Vokkaliga, Gudi Vokkaliga, Keeraikara Vokkaliga, Kappu Vokkaliga, Namdhari Vokkaliga, Musuku Vokkaliga, Nonaba Vokkaliga, kotte vokkaliga, halakki Vokkaliga, Gangadikar Vokkaliga.
The Gowdas are now - a- days are active in politics, Bureacracy,Art,Literature,Technology,Business and sports. The important personalities are: H.D Deve Gowda, former Prime Minister of India, S.M. Krishna, Former Chief Minister of karnataka and Governor of Maharastra, now External Affairs Minister, Kuvempu, Poet, H.D. Kumaraswamy, Former Chief Minister of Karnataka and many more.
